FDA Warns of Bladder Cancer Risk With Actos

WASHINGTON — Patients taking pioglitazone (Actos) for more than a year may have an increased risk of bladder cancer, according to a FDA review of interim data from an ongoing study. The update to the drug’s warning label comes days after two European countries banned use of the drug.

Pioglitazone (Actos) is an anti-diabetic drug used along with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes. It works by helping to restore your body’s proper response to insulin, thereby lowering your blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart-attack or stroke. Pioglitazone is used either alone or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications.

Pioglitazone (Actos) already has one warning concerning congestive heart failure. It may infrequently cause or worsen congestive heart failure. Symptoms of heart failure include: swellings of hands/feet, unusual/sudden weight gain, trouble breathing, or unusual tiredness.

Have a Great Day!!

Donna this is terrible news. What are we doing about it here in Canada? You’ve got to wonder about the profit motive behind not banning a product that leads to a 40% increased risk for bladder cancer: http://bit.ly/l77ERU
