MAMMOGRAMS DENTAL X-RAYS AND THYROID CANCER( Is There a Link?)

In the fall I was diagnosed with a low thyroid.  After researching my symptoms I became aware that a large portion of women, as they enter into menopause seem to have this problem.  A friend of mine sent a very important email today concerning the growing cases of thyroid cancer in women.

Precautions re Mammograms and Dental X-rays/ A Useful Warning

On Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer.

It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms.  He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck.  Many dentists don’t bother to use it.  Also, there is something called a “thyroid guard” for use during mammograms.

By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn’t routinely used. Answer: “I don’t know.  You have to ask for it.” Well, if I hadn’t seen the show, how would I have known to ask?

Women only start their mammograms around the time they enter into menopause.  Hmmmmmm…..

Someone was nice enough to forward this to me. I hope you pass this on to your friends and family.

Have a Great Day!

While I have no idea if there is any increase in risk from mammograms and dental x-rays; I’d say that unless you have a good reason for CT scans, you should read up about the risks.

A single CT scan certainly increases cancer risk – google for it, and you’ll find a zillion studies and article on the subject. Especially in kids – a single ct scan can double cancer risk later in life. You aren’t a kid obviously, but every ct scan increases your cancer risk. Now, there are conditions when the CT scans are necessary and the benefit is greater than risk. But many people today demand tests whether or not they are necessary. So you need to think about your specific case.

I’ve never had ct scans as if yet.

I went back and did a google search. You have to take in consideration the dates of the different articles. All the articles written before late 2008 did in fact state that there is an increase risk of cancer. However, since then they have done extensive and exhaustive research and have been surprised by their findings. Actually I am going to post this.
