As I am always stressing in this blog, you must take your health into your own hands.  What I am talking about is making sure that you understand all your symptoms; research everything; and I mean everything, making sure the websites you go on are NOT endorsed by pharmaceutical companies.  This is extremely important.  If they are, you will find them just pushing their medication.  It is a marketing ploy nothing more.

Bring all your findings to the doctor with you.  He is just a human being like you and me.  He just went to school longer, and if he hasn’t kept up to date with all the new advances in research, medication, therapy, surgery etc… you just might enlighten him/her.  And don’t let them intimidate you.  You have the right to get a second, third or fourth (for that matter) opinion; until you are satisfied that you have an explanation that YOU understand of what is going on in YOUR BODY.

In this day and age where doctors are getting stressed out to the point of being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia themselves, doesn’t that tell you that there is something wrong with the system!  In Canada there is such a shortage of family doctors that in some cities the waiting lists for a doctor is years.

This shortage is serious business.  People who don’t have a doctor go a clinic.  The clinics are staffed by ….you guessed it… family doctors doing rotations in the clinic.  If the doctor cannot do his rotation for whatever reason the clinic closes.  People either have to find another clinic open, which if they get too crowded they close the doors to new walk-ins and patients early for the day; or they have to go to the Emergency department of the Hospital.  So now we have the long 6 hour waits in the Emergency departments because they take patients by priority not by 1st come 1st served.

I hope the light is coming on for some people who complain.  You are complaining to the wrong people.  They are doing their job the best they can.

Well I rambled off track a bit.   Getting back on topic, once diagnosed still research everything there is to know about what you have.  That means everything, from causes, symptoms, diagnoses, procedures and especially medication and side effects.  Anything and everything your doctor tells you, gives you, refers you. Research and make sure you understand the important questions about it:

  1. What is it?
  2. What does it do?
  3. Why do I need it?
  4. What side effects are there?
  5. What are the long term effects?
  6. What is this going to do to my body?
  7. Is it ADDICTIVE?
  8. Is there any other alternative?

In future posts I will be discussing how making a positive lifestyle change made a big difference in my battle with Fibromyalgia.  I will also start posting any positive lifestyle information that I feel will benefit people with Fibromyalgia or/and Depression.

Have a Great Day!

  1. Recently read “How Doctor’s Think” by Jerome Groopman. He says the same thing you are basically. Take responsibility for your body/health. Totally agree with this post. Thumbs up!
