This poem is one of my earliest works with one of my favorite phrases: I am!
Ekharte Tolle and Dr Wayne Dyer are very well known authors who write about being in the NOW! Living in the present moment. Being open to realizing your true calling in life. Easier said than done with the economy the way it is, the disaster in Haiti, the wars, the flu pandemic, etc… What they are trying to say is it (life) would be easier if we lived in the present moment. I had picked up the book “The New Earth” by Ekharte Tolle, believing everyone that it was easy to read. I did not read his previous book “The Power of Now”. It was not until I was into the second chapter that things started to sink in. I then went back and started the first chapter over with a pencil in hand and started reading and underlining as I went along. (I really needed those hi-lighter post-its) Dr. Wayne Dyer has lecture series you can purchase about his books.
I happened to stumble upon an exercise that helped me to live in the moment. It worked wonders for me and I now teach it others. Start by taking a few minutes every day, even if all you can spare is 2 minutes at the beginning, and stop where ever you are. Take notice of your surroundings. If you are in a coffee shop lineup at that moment, take the 2 minutes to really notice your surroundings. Look at the other people. Are they smiling, laughing, frustrated or what exactly are their facial expressions? What does the atmosphere of the coffee shop feel like? Is it welcoming, friendly? What about the smell? Did they just bake something fresh or does is it smell like fresh brewed coffee? The next day you could be outside walking for the 2 minutes. What sort of smells are there? Stop and look around? Any flowers? What about insects? What are they doing? What are the people doing around you? Feel the breeze on your skin? Is the sun out?
It is amazing how much we go about our lives never noticing what is going on around us. Take the time to live in the moment. To live in the Now. By starting with just 2 minutes a day in your busy life, that will gradually grow into 20 minutes, then 1 hour, then 4 hours and so on and so on…. and you won’t even realize you are doing it any more.
What it does is make you feel so much more alive! You notice things that you would never have noticed before. The whole world comes alive. Not just the people but everything becomes more vibrant and beautiful. The grass seems greener, the flowers more colorful, the insects are not just bugs anymore but living things you can watch doing their daily work!
Last summer I had wasps building a nest on the eves outside one of my bedroom windows. I live in a 2 story home so they were far away from anyone walking around. None of the neighbors noticed it unless I purposely showed it to them. Everyday I would watch them as they built this nest bigger and bigger. There were certain wasps just to go get sap. Others would go get this other material. Others would stay behind and work outside the nest. There were other wasps inside working inside the nest. By the time it was finished it was a bit smaller than a basketball with a small opening about the size of a quarter. A few days after it was finished there was absolutely no activity around it. I also thought it was best I should get it down because it was quite big. The only way to get it down was through the bedroom window hitting it with a hockey stick. Not an easy task because it was solid. Once down we found out that the nest was empty. I don’t know why, but they left the nest after they built it. We cut the nest open to see this intricately built honeycomb style house inside. Each tiny little slot fitting one wasp. A truly amazing piece of work!
Don’t just live everyday doing what you usually do; typically going to work in the morning then maybe go to the gym for an hour before coming home for dinner, then maybe watching TV before going to bed. Live in the moment! Become alive! Wake up and smell the roses!! That same routine will become alive with exciting new possibilities just by living in the present!!
